Nineteen more Members of Parliament (MPs) have joined proceedings in Parliament increasing the number to 28 at Monday’s sitting.

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Edward Doe Adjaho, was earlier forced to suspend sitting for about an hour because he met only nine legislators in the Chamber when he arrived in the House to preside over today’s business.

According to Citi News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Richard Sky, the 28 MPs, who are currently in the House are “working on the National Health Insurance Bill.”

The House reconvened on September 3 for a special sitting, which is expected to last until September 28, 2012.

The House has been on recess for less than a month. The MPs were recalled from vacation to help pass into law the controversial CI 73/77, which is seeking to create 45 new constituencies.

According to Sky, the “speaker met an unprecedented scene in Parliament” when he arrived and had to suspend sitting immediately.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Esikuma Odoben Brakwa, PC Appiah Ofori, has criticised his colleagues for wasting the tax payers’ money. The MPs who were also present shared similar views.

It is, however, not clear what is keeping legislators from the House.
