The Vice-President of Ghana, Mr Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has urged Muslims to resist the temptation of opportunists who recruit macho-men to cause violence to political opponents.
He underscored the need for all to work hard to sustain the country's burgeoning democracy, saying “our ability to participate in governance and take active interest in the political life of this country is paramount.”
Mr Amissah-Arthur was addressing the Eid-Ur-Fitr celebration of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana at Ashongman in Accra Sunday.
He expressed the hope that the Muslim Communities, irrespective of party affiliation and ethnic background, would unite and support the government to promote development.
The Vice-President said the unity of purpose in which the nation came together to bid farewell to the late President John Evans Atta Mills clearly demonstrated how people could come together in peace in spite of their differences.
“I want to assure you that the government is all out to bring unity among Muslims, and between Muslims and people of other faiths,” he said.
The Vice-President challenged Muslims to rededicate themselves to the study of the teachings of the Holy Prophet and be guided at all times by the spiritual values and moral precepts, to ensure peace, social justice, tolerance and equality in the country.
He said the self- discipline and sacrifice Muslims had endured over the month-long fasting, should be sustained.
The Ameer and Missionary in-charge of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Ghana, Maulvi Dr A. Wahab Adam, said religion should be a powerful tool to foster unity, tolerance, mutual respect, cooperation and understanding as well as peaceful co-existence.
