The former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan has assured President Mahama of his personal support as he and the entire country mourns late President Mills.

Mr. Annan who resigned recently as the Special UN Envoy to Syria described late President Mills as a democrat when he paid his respect to President Mahama at the Castle on Tuesday.

“Our country has gone through a difficult period; we have lost a leader and a democrat. Now you have the baton and I am here to pay my respect to congratulate you in these difficult times as you take on a very difficult challenge for our nation.

“I am sure you are going to lead us as effectively as any leader could and let me assure you of my personal support and I am sure that Ghanaians will stand behind you and work with you as you steer the affairs of the State” Kofi Annan said.

President Mahama expressed gratitude to the former UN Secretary General and said he hopes to tap from his wide international experience. “I know you and President Mills were quite close and at several times of challenges he relied on your good counsel and you have always given that and I count that I will be able to continue that relationship” President Mahama said.

He added that “I hope that I will be able to freely draw on your wide international experience to the benefit of our dear country”.

“We know that we can always count on your assistance when we need it”
