The opposition New Patriotic Party has slammed the NDC government over what it calls its hypocritical attitude towards ideas introduced by the erstwhile NPP government like the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Program.
According to NPP, the NDC mocked the LEAP program when it was introduced in 2008. Government re-launched the program over the weekend and announced an increment of the grant from GH¢ 12 to GH¢ 36 per month for poor households around the country.
One of the brains behind the program Stephen Asamoah Boateng told Citi News the re-launch is just a cheap way of scoring political points from the poor and vulnerable in society.
Mr. Boateng, who was onetime Information Minister, told Citi News, “when we launched the LEAP they thought it was ridiculous, they laughed and joked about it. We thought that as Social Democrats they would rather support such a move and suggest ideas to make it better.
“For the NDC I’m surprised that they’ve picked it up and they are claiming that they’ve re-launched it, there are no deep thinkers in the NDC, what they do is they wait till NPP does something then they ridicule it for a while for points for election purposes.”
Meanwhile, the Convention People’s Party said the LEAP Program although helping in poverty alleviation, is not the way to go.
