The chief legal counsel for businessman Alfred Woyome has lashed out at a former Attorney General, Martin Amidu, positing that his letter released to Citi News on the handling of the ongoing Woyome scandal is a “red herring” and “inconsistent”.

According to Mr. Amidu, who was relieved of his post as Attorney General for “misconduct”, he is disappointed in the legal representation of the State in the ongoing GhC51 million judgment debt payment case involving Mr. Woyome.

In the statement, Mr. Amidu said “the quality and commitment of legal representation for the Republic is very important for the success of the Republic in retrieving this gargantuan money in the face of the continued strong support from a politically immature and ignorant section of interest groups for the Government to overlook the loot.”

Responding to the statement, the chief legal counsel, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor told Citi News: “I think that it was a statement that was issued in a very bad taste and contains a lot of inconsistencies.”

He added: “For instance in paragraph two of his statement he says that he has discussed the matter in question with the Solicitor General, two State Attorneys and then he goes further in paragraph 4 or paragraph 5 to say that this same persons with whom he had discussed strategies were persons who had impressed upon him through some memos to have this matter withdrawn or to have the said monies paid and the said matter concluded. So which is which? I believe it is just a red herring that he issued.

“These were persons that he was attending court with to prosecute this matter. So you as an Attorney General you wouldn’t have the opportunity to prosecute this matter, and you failed to do so and then when you exit the state, you metamorphose yourself into a public interest lawyer to say that let us form a vigilante group and prosecute this matter, that we need competent lawyer,” Mr. Dafeamekpor stated.

He further added: “He may have a case, but he should have made the effort when he was in power, when he had the opportunity as the AG and he didn’t do so he has a motive clearly for issuing this statement.”
