Spokesperson for the Rawlingses Kofi Adams has defended former first lady Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings’ recent comments about the state of the economy.

The former first lady earlier this week told visiting African women that the country’s economy is not in good shape. At that same gathering Mrs. Rawlings described Ghana as one of the most expensive countries to live in on the continent. Spokesperson for the Rawlings Kofi Adams says the former first lady’s assertion cannot be disputed because the cost of living is now high.

He was speaking on Joy FM’s news analysis program Newsfile Saturday which is also telecast on MultiTV. “Gradually, Ghana in some areas is becoming a little bit expensive. I happen to be in the Western Region…in 2009, this year I happen to visit Western Region again and cost of some basic things have all of a sudden shot up,” he said.

Mr Adams cited the Vice-president, Mr John Dramani Mahama, whom he said “had cause to even complain about the cost of hotel accommodation where in some of the star hotels…the minimum they will take about $200 [or] $250 a night.”

The Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress also quoted the Social Welfare Minister Mr ET Mensah as saying tourists who visit the country spend four times the amount they have spent if they went to another African country.
