The President, Professor John Evans Atta Mills, has been strongly cautioned to tighten his security detail around him to avoid being ousted by former President Jerry John Rawlings.

Speaking on Accra based radio station yesterday, Osei Yaw Nketia popularly known as Dr Asemfofro, staunch NDC member, who was buside himself with anger warned that former President Mr Rawlings “is a dangerous man who can stage a coup to overthrow sitting President Mills.”

He premised his caution to President Mills on the basis that Mr Rawlings in 1981 staged a coup and overthrew Dr Hilla Limann, in 1981 after Ghanaians had elected Dr Limann in a national election.

According to Dr Asemfofro, Mr Rawlings is still thirsting to become the President of this country even though he has served his term as President of Ghana. He wondered what Rawlings was able to achieve under his 19 years rule of this country, arguing that “his 19 year of Ghana was distasteful and nothing to write home about.”

“Rawlings demonstrated his burning desire to become President again of this country, the next day, January 8, 2001; he handed over power to former President John Agyekum Kufuor,” recounted Dr Asemfofro.
The die-hard NDC activist therefore asked Mr Rawlings to “shut up and allow President Mills to rule this country.”

He said Professor Mills was not elected as President of Ghana by Mr Rawlings but by the good people of this country, adding that his day-to-day disparaging comments and insults of President Mills was “shameful and disgraceful.” In the opinion of Dr Asemfofro, former President Rawlings must bow down his head in shame, describing him as “someone who does not respect him.”

He argued that the mere fact that Rawlings is the founding member of the NDC does not give him the leeway to be persistently chastising and disgracing President Mills. “Mr Rawlings must understand that in terms of age Professor Mills is older than him and in the area of academics he [referring to former President Rawlings] is nowhere near Professor Mills.

Professor Mills is a learned Professor whose academic laurels far outweigh what Mr Rawlings has,” Dr Asemfofro noted. Against this background, Dr Asemfofro told Mr Rawlings and his wife Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings to learn to show respect and decorum towards President Mills and refrain from their constant verbal attacks against the President.

Dr Asemfofro advised Mr Rawlings to take a cue from past President like Bill Clinton of USA, Olushegun Obasanjo of Nigeria among others and learn to conduct himself in the way and manner these former presidents have behaved.

“We can all see the way former US President Bill Clinton and Nigerian President Olushegun Obasanjo have conducted themselves, why can’t former President Rawlings take a cue from these people and learn to conduct himself in such manner,” quizzed Asemfofro.

Although is an ardent fan of Mr Rawlings, Asemfofro observed that he abhors him for his persistent castigations of Prof Mills. “Mr Rawlings should respect himself so that we can also respect him and anything sort of that we who are even his fans will never respect him,” asserted Dr Asemfofro.

The NDC, he stressed, can stand on its two legs without the assistance of Mr Rawlings, adding that if former President Rawlings wishes to leave the part he can go and nobody will prevent him from taking that decision.

Dr Asemfofro also descended heavily on Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Majority leader, describing him as somebody who was following Mr Rawlings blindly. “Mr Bagbin did not help matters when instead of telling and asking Mr Rawlings in the face to stop his continuous repudiation of President Mills, he also stirred the hornet nest by blindly supporting him (Mr Rawlings),” he indicated.

Following his submissions on radio, Dr Asemfofro indicated that he would not be surprised if Mr Rawlings will hire thugs and direct them to take his life from the face of the earth. In the estimation of Dr Asemfofro, President Mills was given a four-year mandate to turn the fortunes of the Ghanaian economy, and that he was confident that the President will execute that mandate with diligence.

However, he added that if after the four years Ghanaians are not satisfied with the performance of Prof. Mills, Ghanaians in their own wisdom will give the presidency to another person and not former President Rawlings.

Since when did dr Asemfofro learn that insults, name calling and criticisms are not good in governance? How can he easily forget his actions in the Takoradi Presidential people's forum? He is a hypocrite. Was he not the one who came out publicly against Ayariga and others that they distributed cash and cars to serial callers and left him out? He should be told to concentrate on his sale of traditional medicine and leave politics alone. Yes the 'fools' would always be used for the dirty jobs and dumped. Asemfofro is a typical example of such 'fools'. He wants small chops from the president but he must know that Prof is smarter than him. He should rather go and join the Rawlings that might better serve his interest. Shame unto Asemfofro

We may not like Rawlings, but we must learn to be fair with him. Rawlings do not have the academic credentials of Atta Mills, but who told you that we need academic credentials to manage a country. If academic credentials were important to Atta Mills, he should have remain at the university. In a similar matter, if age is what matters, then there are some older people around the villages, we might as well go and get them to rule the nation. The fact is, Atta Mills government is not doing well at all. His appoitments are disgrace to the country. A country like Ghana with a lot of highly educated and highly experienced people in most areas around, why should we have these class one, Team Z people making important decisions for this country? And having worked so hard to get the party elected, deosn't Rawlings have the right like any other Ghanaian to express his view on matters of national important? Especially matters which are so close to him. Bill Clinton lives in American and we are talking about Ghana. be he an ex-president or not, Rawlings has the same right as any other person in the country, and he can criticise Atta Mills as much as he likes. That is the essence of democracy. Those who are ashamed of their masters performance and do not want the president exposed by Rawlings, I say to them "tough luck".

I do not share the view that the former President (Rawlings) wants to and could overthrow the government of President Ata Mills by any means before the end of his 4-year term. This is because, though Rawlings manged to overthrow the elected government of Liman on the last day of 1981, the situation in Ghana and globally today is very different from the 1980s. In those days, military coups were common in the developing world, especially Africa. The cold war was still strong and alive, deviding developing countries along cold war lines of socialism and capitalism, that also encouraged miliatry dictatorships, corruption and human rights abuses in developing countries. Today, democracy, the rule of law and respect for human rights is gaining roots in Ghana and other devloping countries. Military coups and dictatorships are out of date, though there are still some military interventions in Africa and dictators in developing countries. There is no turning back in Ghana when it comes to democracy and no right thinking person in or outside the military would contemplate overthrowing the elected government of Ghana by force. Unlike the 1980s, there will be no support in the military or the population. Ghana would be isolated by the rest of the world if there was a military coup. Rawlings is not that stupid to attempt to overthrow Ghana's government for the third time in his life. He is only frustrated that the Ata Mills goverment has not arrested and and jailed NPP ministers and officials as the Kufour government did to some NDC ministers and officals for corruption. Rawlings will never forgive the NPP government under Kufour for the attempt to jail his wife (Nana Konadu Agyemeng) and the how Tsatsu Tsikata and others such as Dan Agbodakpi were treated. Again, he is frustrated and disappointed that some NPP appointees under the Kofour government are stiil in positions that NDC members should be occupying. Despite his frustration and open attacks on President Mills, Rawlings will not use force to overthrow the government. He is not a professor but I also know that he is an intelligent person. The NDC may not select Ata Mills as their Presidential candidate for 2012 through the influence of Rawlings but that would not be overthrow of the government by Rawlings.

I 100% support Dr. Asem.. Rawlings shld behave well even if he believes he is the founder of the party. One person does not make a party or at worse NDC should not be seen as family property. In fact, his behaviour towards president mills is getting out of hand and i call on peace loving Ghanaians to rise up against him now before it is too late. Let us tell him in plain terms that he doesn't know anything and what he is doing is completely wrong. It is Sgt Aloriga Akatapore and co. who put him forward as their leader and he turned around and chased all of them away and continued in that manner to become a President. In terms of bravery, strength and knowledge to operate military equipment, and most important of all strategies to win a war, Rawling's head is hollow and can not do this, but for sgt Akatapore and co. Let me stress again on the importance of knowledge and winning a war which Rawling's head does even have 0% of it. Vietnam war against the Americans, the vietnamese captain who led his country to defeat the US did that solely through thinking out very good strategies from his head to defeat the US with all their amunitions and even very good brains. Please let us rise up and tell Rawlings he is nobody, he knows nothing and he is not stronger than any of us even we leave knowledge aside and use physique

Na Lie!
You can't fire us from a party we single handedly founded. We are taking back our party through constituency elections and present a candidate who crush Mills in the primaries. Have your government and give us back our party. Where was Mills when we were struggling to build the party. Crooks and thieves have taken over our party, you are all fired
