The Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu, says government will by the end of this week, name a three man team to meet with Vodafone representatives in taking a second look at portions of the Sales and Purchase Agreement of the GT/Vodafone deal, most especially the National Fibre Optic Backbone and other landed properties.

According to him, government will decide on a “team comprising people with sound communication background, deep rooted financial accounting abilities and a lawyer”.

This follows a decision by government yesterday, to re-engage Vodafone UK over the 70% sale of GT.

Tough President Mills’ administration says they are not interested in reviewing the entire Sales and Purchase Agreement, they maintain that portions of it are inimical to the interest of the country, and they intend to correct it.

Speaking to Kwami Sefa-Kayi on PEACEFM’s flagship programme “Kokrokoo”, he said, “ideally, it is the wish of many Ghanaians that those assets (National Fibre Optic Backbone) should have been owned by government, but it became part of the assets that was given to Vodafone."

He however, added that; “in all this, we have to ensure that we do not hurt the image and reputation of Ghana as a safe and pure investment destination…for that government will do all it can to protect every legitimate investment.”

According to the Communications Minister, though the sale of 70% of GT shares to Vodafone International was $900m, only $274m was the amount of money finally realized. This is because, he said, a substantial part of the money was used to defray debts owed by Ghana Telecom accrued as a result of gross mismanagement, financial malpractices and irregularities by Telenor/Telecom Management Partners (TMP) and later the three-member Interim Management Committee (IMC).

He further disclosed that government will call for a forensic audit into that and also into how an amount of 1.7bn old Ghana cedis went unaccounted for.

“…they reached an agreement with somebody…debt collection…a payment of about ¢1.7bn…We will need to find out who received that money and where it came from…we will conduct investigations into the matter as well…since it contributed to the non-realization of value for money in the transaction…,” he said.

Hon. Iddrisu expressed regret that the divestiture process was not fully adhered to during negotiations on the GT sale to Vodafone.

“Our divestiture law was not respected by the previous government headed by Ex-President Kufuor. The fact that you are President or a Minister, does not allow you to do as you wish, you must do it in accordance with the law of Ghana…The acquisition of the 3G license should have followed laid down procedure and regulation under the National Communication Authority (NCA) Act…that was not fully respected, that is also an issue,” he added.

DO THE NDC HAVE LAWERS AMONG THEM?
DO THE NDC PEOPLE HAVE LAWERS AMONG THEM? IF YES THEN THEY SHOULD RE-THINK AGAIN BEFORE GOING TO THE RE-NEGOTIATION TABLE AGAIN BECAUSE IT WILL FLOP AGAIN LIKE THE WHOLE COMMITTEE WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED TO INVESTIGATE THE WHOLE VODAFONE DEAL. THIS IS COMMON SENSE, SIMPLE COMMON SENSE. THE WHOLE COMMISSION OF ENQUIRY TO THE VODAFONE DEAL HAS FAILLED HOW MUCH MORE THIS USELESS THREE MAN COMMITTEE. THE NDC GOVERNMENT AND THEIR POPULISM HAS FAILLED THE PEOPLE OF GHANA AND THEY ARE TRYING TO GET SOMETHING TO HIDE BEHIND. THESE VODAFONE PEOPLE ARE NOT FOOLS LIKE THE NDC AND GHANAIANS. GHANAIANS ARE FOOLS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE FOOLS. NDC, PLEASE YOU PEOPLE ARE DISGRACING AND EMBARRASSING GHANA ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE

NPP is very funny. The committees shall and will be formed a hundred times to address the mess NPP left behind. If NPP has nothing to hide, what then is their problem with committees. That the NPP would have the moral courage to be making noise in this country inspite of the mess they left behind is very annoying.

The NDC government is trying so hard to paint the NPP as most corrupt. The fact is, inspite of all the corruption allegation levelled against the NPP under Mr. J.A. Kuffour they managed the economy better than NDC 1 under Mr. J.J. Rawlings. Mr. Rawlings and most of his stewards were from rags to riches by the time they exited power. No matter how hard the NDC tries to lie, scream and yell about the NPP's performance, facts are facts, the NPP did better. NDC get to work and fix the economy. The "cor num teas" and properganda is not helping us. Ghanaians knows that you are both corrupt (NPP & NDC) so what's new? We voted for a change, for a better Ghana, under Prof. Atta Mills and just 8 month down the line we are already losing hope and confidence in the Proffessor, even the bad manager of Ghana's economy, the founder of NDC, has lost hope in his man, Prof. Atta Mills. We did not vote the NDC back to power to form committees to proof to Ghanaians that the NPP under Mr. J. A. Kuffour was more corrupt than the NDC 1. We were promised a BETTER GHANA from a Proffessor, the King of Peace ( not peacefm) who is going to be a father to all Ghanaians, however, from the way things are going I have given up hope. Prof. Atta Mills is very vindictive, if you want to know why you can ask SPIO and KWESI B. Knowing that they can't out perform the NPP, the NDC is now reducing governance into a compitition of who is most corrupt, NPP or NDC? What a shame! GOD SAVE MOTHER GHANA Where are all the other small parties (CPP, PNC, DFP,NRP) and the pressure groups, wake up and help cure the absurdity that is going in Ghana. GHANAIANS DESERVE BETTER!

Lets stop damaging the image of our county abroad by the petty politics. The abrogation/review has turned to re-engagement. Now Haruna started wining and dining with the 'sharks' so he has toned down on vodafon. Thank God, but we are not ready for another committee. Mills we beg you
