The First Ghana Water Forum opened in Accra today on the theme “Accelerating Water Security for Ghana’s socio-economic development.” The forum which is being organized by the Ministry of Water Resources, Works and Housing is being attended by both local and foreign stakeholders in the water sector, NGOs and civil society organizations.

It is aimed at taking stock of the water security and sanitation
situation and to ensuring greater attention to Ghana’s agenda on water. In a speech read for him by Hon Joseph Yileh Chireh, Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, the Vice President John Dramani Mahama said one of the top priorities of the development agenda of the NDC government is ensuring water security in the country.

According to the vice president, a country enjoys water security when it has the capacity to provide sufficient and sustainable quality and quantity of water for all types of uses. Whilst commending the country’s donor partners for their immense contribution to improving access to water, the vice president said government will increase resources to the Ghana Water Company Ltd and the Community Water and Sanitation Agency to ensure adequate water supply in urban and rural areas.
