The Spokesperson for the Vice President, on Wednesday played down the scathing criticism of a section of the public that the number two personality is too casual with his apparel during important state functions.

Mr John Abdulai Jinapor told the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Accra, that the affable nature of Mr John Dramani Mahama makes it possible for people to tell him during informal discussions at public gatherings, to be grandiose to conform to the trappings of his office.

Mr Jinapor observed that although Mr Mahama takes the criticisms in good faith, he is of the view that leadership is a national service that must go with modesty and humility. He said before Mr Mahama became the Vice President, his love and attachment to the ideals of Pan Africanism and the cultural heritage of Ghana had made him a long time admirer of African fabrics like the smock and tie and dye.

Mr Jinapor noted that Mr Mahama feels good in African wear although he does not shy away from Western clothing. "Mr Mahama simply wants to wear the smock, booboo, kente, jumper or anything traditional. Even when you spot him in coat and tye, he looks unassuming and modestly dressed for the occasion.

"The Vice President believes that his new appointment in life is the best opportunity for him to showcase the African Personality and market made-in-Ghana products. "He had always argued that if Ghanaians do not patronise made in Ghana products, who should do so for them?"

Mr Jinapor said such nationalistic fervour from politicians would facilitate the African Personality concept of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first President. "There is no doubt that the Vice President comes from a solid African background and he is very passionate about it. "He believes that political power is transient hence the need to remain faithful to his roots and keep his head above water."

Mr Jinapor noted that the personal idiosyncrasies of the Vice President are likely to remain with him for a long time.

The fact that Ghanaians would criticize the VP for being true to his roots & culture rather than wearing Western clothes just shows the ignorance & slave mentality that some still have. To many in the world his dressing evokes a tradition of African Kings & royalty in the richness of our fabrics & colors. We can never move forward if we can't celebrate & respect our own culture & traditions rather than thinking that White is right or the Western way is the best way. Before we were introduced to suits & ties we had our own culture of dress which we should patronize & globalize to help boost our own economy, just as westerners patronize & globalize their way of dress. Think Globally, Shop Locally!

the Vice President has been a very humble man, from my point of view. he has always looked casual with his taste of clothing. So attaining the 2nd high office in the land does not mean he should change his clothing (his office has no uniform). I have seen him in Suite and African clothing and he still looks smart, but I would urge him to check his WEIGHT, he seems to be putting on unnecessary weight, check your diet and eating habits. I would rather like to ask MP's, Minister, Deputy's and the whole lot of politicians, that they should dress according to their wealth and not get to high office and start dressing extravagantly it does not add any respect to them, but rather pushes them to spend more on clothing, which in turn gets you to dip your hands into monies of the State.

So they have the nerve to call our clothing casual?? so what is formal then?? Suit. collar, tie yeah?? These are the people who will never buy made in Ghana goods. This is rubbish, Mr Vice President, please wear your booboo, Woodin and the others. If some don't like it, then tough!

John Mahama is naturally humble and a real role model. I have never liked the NDC but I will be very bias to say anything wrong against this man. I admire him so much and I think he got to where he is as a result of his humility. Ghanaians should leave John alone.

Vice President's style of dressing does not matter to most Ghanaians in this era of extreme poverty in peoples' pocket. He should work hard to salvage Ghanaians from the economic hardship. Ghanaians are suffering. With a master's degree, a wife and 3 children , my gross salary is Gh 640.00. I will be very happy if he wears T-shirt all the time and however majority of Ghanaians are ok in their living conditions.

I am sad how eurocentric our minds have been made. I'm sad for Ghanaian who in this day age of self fulfilment speak against the vice president because he wears African dresses. Is this not sad? is just like telling a friend your ashmed of the your mother looks. We are African. Created by God with a purpose and reason. Who said African dresses do not make one a human being? Please lets change our minds, we need to be proud of what we have. God bless the vice president and bless mother Ghana. Thank you
