The Electoral Commission of Ghana has said that structures will be put in place after the biometric registration exercise to make provisions for citizens who never had the chance to register.

The Acting Director of Public Affairs of EC, Christian Owusu Parry said, ‘we have always said that this is a rolling registration. In other words, they keep moving from one registration center to the other and if we have to extend registration in a particular registration center at the end of the ten day, it throws the whole program out of gear’.

‘However the commission is monitoring the situation on the ground and we are also receiving reports. And so if it becomes obvious that for some reasons a lot of people could not register in a particular area, the commission would then consider putting in place an arrangement for them to have the opportunity to register’ he added.

Speaking in an interview on an Accra-based radio, Citi Fm, Christian Owusu Parry said as the fourth phase of the registration exercise begins, ‘we expect that the numbers will increase with more and more people being challenged.’

He therefore indicated that, ‘the Commission will very soon be inaugurating the District Review Committee. As soon as they are inaugurated, they will start hearing the challenges that have been filed against individuals’.

In the case of double registration that has been detected, Owusu Parry said, ‘they are still being investigated and there is a Committee called the Adjudication Committee which is examining every case of double registration in the data base’ and added that ‘after it has made its recommendation to the commission, the commission will forward its report to the Police where necessary for appropriate action’

When asked about the provisions the E.C has made for special voting for media personnel and security persons ahead of the 2012 polls, he pointed out that, ‘these are issues that will be discussed in some details at IPAC and these issues are election related so we will be discussing it as we prepare towards 2012 elections’.
